When the spirit wains, the form appears. - Bukowski

Artist STATEMENT

My work comes out of a tradition of abstract expressionism where the gesture is transferred directly to paint. I’m interested in applying this idea of gesture to three-dimensional forms and making it a basic part of both form and content. Although my work for the past thirty years has been mostly in clay, I’ve recently been working with concrete and colored grouts. I’m continuing my exploration of gesture through the unique properties of these materials.  My latest work is also about relationships between abstraction and representation, art and craft, and color and form.
